I've just stumbled across a wonderfull piece of micro-history on Wikipedia. It tells how a statue of a dog led to riots on the streets of London almost exactly 100 years ago.

I finally downloaded the pics I took at last weekend's Thames Festival.
There was a sandcastle competition, held on a sandy beach on the Thames. It was very odd sitting in a deck chair on a beach with a view across the City of London.
In the evening there was a firework display and a carnival procession, with some spectacular costumes and floats, and great music.
